Year 6
Welcome to Year 6!
Year 6 provides a wealth of opportunities for children to explore their learning through a creative and imaginative curriculum, whilst also preparing the children to take their SATs exams in May.
Our exciting topics include Legacy, Survival and Identity. There are a number of special events and trips throughout the year; the highlights of which are the Year 6 Production in July and a week long residential trip to Calshot in January.
During the year, we work hard to enhance children’s life long learning skills. The children will be challenged to take more responsibility for their learning and personal organisation. They are encouraged to reflect on their Junior School experiences and to build upon them in preparation for their Secondary School transition.
PE and Games lessons take place on a Thursday
Each class will visit the library weekly - class teachers will let children know when this will be.

Civic Award Information
2025 will be the 40th anniversary of the Civic Award.
Forty years ago, a secondary teacher delivered the Duke of Edinburgh Award to his pupils. He was frustrated that younger children didn’t have a similar award – so created the Civic Award which has since been completed by thousands of children around Hampshire.
With our children growing up in increasingly more challenging times, we strive to instil in them a sense of belonging and teach them that not only are they part of the Locks Heath Junior School community, but that they also belong to the wider community around them. This year, as part of the Year 6 PSHE curriculum, we would like all our pupils to participate in a small part of the Civic Award. This will run from Monday 6th October to Friday 28th November.
At the end of this time, your child can then make the decision if they would like to continue working towards the full award which runs from December until June 2026. Those who successfully complete the full award are invited to a ½ day fun-day and to attend a certificate giving ceremony later in the school year where family members, school staff and special guests are invited to celebrate the children’s achievements.
Civic Award 2025
What is the Civic Award?
The Civic Award is a Citizenship programme and a preliminary to the Duke of Edinburgh Award. It is designed to challenge children to participate in a range of different activities over a period of at least 6 months.
What activities do I have to complete?
Physical Hobby
Any activity that raises your heartbeat! Ideas might be:
running, walking the dog, football, dance, gymnastics, horse-riding, swimming, karate, gymnastics, rugby, netball or something of your own choice.
Non-physical Hobby
Choose to learn something new such as:
reading, learning a new language, playing an instrument, arts and crafts, baking, model-making, sewing, knitting or something of your own choice.
Service to the School
This could be a combination of jobs which could include:
representing the school at sports and music competitions, monitor jobs, school council, play leader, helping in the classroom.
Service to the Community – you may need support from your parents to help you complete these tasks
This could be a combination of things which might include:
helping at a local sports group, sponsored events, being part of the Scouts, Guides or Cadets, participating in a bake sale or an organised beach clean.
How long will the award take to complete?
The award will run from October 2025 to June 2026. During this time, you need to aim to fill in all of the boxes in your booklet.
How do I show that I have taken part in different activities?
Photographs! Ask someone to take photos of you participating in different activities. You can either print these out and bring them in or an adult could send them to
l.elsworthy@locksheath-jun.hants.sch.uk
How will school help me to complete the award?
LHJS is alerted to lots of community events. We will let you know of different things you might want to get involved with. You may have to arrange to attend these events with a family member rather than with a teacher from school.
How will my achievements be recognised?
In June, all the children who have completed the whole award will be invited to a ½ day of fun. More information about this will be shared nearer the time. There will also be a formal presentation ceremony where friends and family will be invited to celebrate the children’s achievements.

Home Learning Independent Study
Below are a few details about Year 6 Home Learning. If you need any further help with what your child should be doing at home or how you can help, then please do email us and we can advise you.
READING
We visit the library weekly, and the children will choose two books: a levelled book linked to the Accelerated Reader tests we carry out through the year and a free read book for pleasure. We encourage the children to read as often as possible (and for at least 20 minutes daily) independently or to to any willing listener! We expect them to read at least four times each week. From the Spring term we will set a home reading task which should take about 15 – 20 minutes to complete. This will be to help to prepare them for their end of year tests. These would be given on a weekly basis, with the children having a minimum of three school evenings to complete.
MATHS
--Set on Thursday.
--Due on Thursday.
Arithmetic questions are set weekly for the children to complete. They can use any resources, methods or jottings to support their working.
Occasionally at the start of the year the homework will have some content which we have not covered for some time (or at all in a few cases). If your child would like to have a go at these questions that would be great, otherwise they can be left and we will cover it in class. It is not necessary to spend more than 30 minutes on this task, even if the work is not completed. We will be monitoring scores across the year group which will help us to work out where we need to provide extra support or reteach specific skills.
On the website you can find information on how we teach the different calculation methods if you would like to support your child.
Thank you for your support in getting the children ready for SATs and Secondary School.
